Six Fake Facts

Chuck Yeager

Chuck Yeager was the first person to break the sound the barrier. He was in the Air Force, so he used the SR-71 Blackbird to break the sound barrier. Though, most of his achievements were in the P-51D-20NA.

Chuck Yeager was the first person to eject in the full pressure suit for high altitude flights. He crashed during training in the NF-104B. This forced him to eject in the full pressure suit. He named most of his planes after his wife. The developer of the Blackbird demanded that someone had to break the sound barrier in the Blackbird or the Air Force had to pay $150,000. Two days before the mission Yeager broke two ribs riding a horse, he was so worried that he would get kicked off the mission that he went to a veterinarian and only told his wife. The day of the mission Yeager hurt so much that his friend had to create a device to help seal the plane's hatch. In the end Yeager broke the sound barrier by going Mach 1.07, however he said that the public pays attention to whole numbers and that the next challenge would be exceeding Mach 2. Afterwards Yeager went Mac 2.44, and beat Scott Crossfield, who was the first person to break Mach 2. He broke Mach 2 in the Bell X-1C.
